Glendora, CA (Volleyball) – Despite storming out the gate with a 30-21 win in the first game of their match against the state’s 10th ranked Bakersfield College, the Lady Owls fell in next three straight games, 22-30, 27-30, and 17-30 Friday night. Citrus was plagued by 14 serve receive errors, for their third loss in four games.
In first game the Lady Owls came out firing on all cylinders, jumping out to an eight point 18-10 lead. Citrus’ lead would never fall below six points, as they cruised to a nine point 30-21 victory. In the second game, the teams flipped roles. After Citrus’ Kellie Hall opened up the game with back to back kills, the Renegades took over, going on a 11-2 run, to take a commanding 11-4 lead. Citrus would pull back to within five points after a Becca Dean kill made the score 14-19, but Bakersfield put the foot back on the gas and won by eight 30-28.
The third game would prove to be the pivotal point in the match as it featured 12 ties, and four lead changes. Bakersfield jumped out to the early lead 3-1 lead after a Katie Cronk kill, but Citrus would pull even as both teams traded points, until the Lady Owls took advantage of two Jazelle Rodriguez aces and a Mackenzie Pike kill to take a 13-10 lead, their first of the game.
Citrus would continue to push their lead, winning by as much as five points after a Becca Dean kill made the score 18-13. The Renegades proved resilient however, and took the lead back over after going on a seven to one run after a kill by Heather Liles. The score would be tied once more at 27-27, but Bakersfield scored the final three points to take the 30-27 win. In the fourth and final game, Bakersfield pulled away for good taking a 17-30 victory.
Kellie Hall led all players with 16 kills, while Mackenzie Pike recorded a game high of 26 digs in the loss. Janelle Martinez also recorded a game high with her 34 assists. With the loss, the Lady Owls fall to 8-13 and 3-4 in WSC South play. The Lady Owls have one final home game as they play host Santa Monica College on Tuesday for a 7:00 PM match-up. The Lady Owls took the first meeting with the Corsairs in a tight five game match, 30-23, 28-30, 30-26, 29-31, 15-9.
