Glendora, CA (Volleyball) – After winning its home opener last week against Cerritos College, the Lady Owls dropped their second home game of the year in straight sets to undefeated Fullerton College. The Hornets led wire to wire, but the Lady Owls improved in every game.
Citrus struggled to get things going early on in the first set, as Fullerton would cruise to a 30-14 victory. In the second game, however, the Lady Owls started to show signs of life as it battled back from four down to tie the game up at 10-10 after a kill by Jazelle Rodriguez. Fullerton then pulled away for good, as it won the second game 30-17.
In third game, the Lady Owls really showed their grit, as they would draw close to the Hornets near the end of the game. Trailing, by as much as ten points, Citrus College would win ten of the next thirteen points to draw within three points of the Fullerton lead. With Citrus threatening after back to back kills by Jazelle Rodriguez and Alex Arguelles, and a service ace by setter Janelle Martinez, Fullerton finally put the game away as the Hornet’s Leah Haproff recorded the game winning kill.
In the loss, the Lady Owls were led by Jazelle Rodriguez who recorded 6 kills. Janelle Martinez also played admirably recording 16 assists and two aces. Defensively Mackenzie Pike was Citrus’ leading defender with 17 digs.
With the loss the Lady Owls fall to 1-3 on the season, while Fullerton improves to 5-0. Citrus College will be back out on the road tomorrow morning, as they travel to El Camino, to participate in the El Camino Quad. Games start at 8:00 AM.
