Glendora, CA (Volleyball) – After winning their first game at home, the Lady Owls dropped their second home match in a row after losing a hotly contested match with Ventura College Tuesday night. The Lady Owl’s pushed the Pirates to the brink in the first game, before losing in straight sets on Tuesday night.
The first game proved to be the most exciting of the night. Both squads battled back and forth with 11 lead changes throughout. Ventura would jump out early taking a 3-pont 5-8 lead after an attack error by Becca Dean. The Lady Owl’s rallied back however, taking an 11-9 lead after a block by setter Janelle Martinez. The two teams would trade points back and forth until the game was all tied up at 23.
With the game tied, Citrus would score the next five points, and take a seemingly commanding 28-24 lead. After a timeout by Ventura, however, the Pirates would come storming back and tie the game up at 30-30 after a bad set by Becca Dean. Ventura would score the final two points of the game to take a 32-30 win in the 1st game.
After blowing their four point lead, the Lady Owls came out flat in the second game, as Ventura jumped out to a 7-0 lead. Citrus would make numerous charges, but Ventura never let them get closer than five points, winning the second game 30-22.
In the third and final game, Ventura would take the early lead. Citrus would keep it close and come to within one point of the Pirates lead, after a Jazelle Rodriguez kill made the score 13-14. Ventura began to slowly pull away yet again, leading by as much as seven points at 17-24. The Lady Owls proved to be pesky however, as they rattled off five straight points, to pull within two points after an Alex Arguelles kill.
Both teams traded points until the score ended up at 26-28, after Lady Owl Rebecca Hernandez’s kill pulled Citrus back to within two points. Ventura ended up being too much for the Lady Owls to handle, however, as they scored the final two points, both off Citrus errors to preserve their 30-26 victory.
With the loss, Citrus falls to 1-4 on the season. The Lady Owl’s hit the road this weekend as they finish up their pre-conference slate with a trip to the San Diego Mesa Tournament, beginning Friday September 22.
