Glendora, CA(Volleyball) – The Citrus College women’s volleyball program picked up their third win in their past five games, with a straight sets victory over Allan Hancock on Friday evening. The Lady Owls swept the Bulldogs in impressive fashion with a 30-20, 30-21, 30-13 victory.
Both teams came prepared to play in the first game, with each team exchanging points to kick of the match. With the score 15 all the Lady Owls began to pull away as they would go on to score ten of the next 11 points to take a commanding 25-16 lead, capped off by a Becca Hernandez kill. Citrus would continue to put pressure on Allan Hancock eventually taking the first game 30-20.
In the second game, the Lady Owls picked up their momentum right where they left off, jumping out to a quick 10-2 lead after back to back kills by Jazelle Rodriguez and Kellie Hall. Citrus would continue to protects its lead, not allowing the Bulldogs to get within eight points of the Citrus lead. Eventually Hall, put the game away with a resounding kill giving Citrus a 30-21 advantage.
The third game proved similar to the second, with the Lady Owls again charging out to a quick lead. Citrus would pull ahead 12-2 early on, and never look back. Citrus would lead much of the game by at least 13 points, and finishing the Bulldogs off on a Hernandez ace.
In the win, the Lady Owls were led by Kellie Hall who had a team and game high 15 kills, while Jazelle Rodriguez finished behind her with eight kills. Defensively, Citrus had a stellar showing from a pair of freshman, Becca Dean and Mackenzie Pike. Dean led the Lady Owls with a season high 19 digs, while Pike chipped in with 15. Janelle Martinez also recorded a season high on Friday night, as she had her best effort with 33 assists.
With the win the Lady Owls improve to 5-8 on the season. Citrus will have one more Western State Conference cross-divisional match-up before it begins its WSC South slate. The Lady Owls will travel to Santa Barbara next Tuesday for its final match with a WSC North opponent this season. Game time is set for 6:00 PM.
