Glendora, CA(Volleyball) – Over the past ten games, the Lady Owls have shown a remarkable consistency that they have been shooting for all season long. Unfortunately the only consistent thing about the Lady Owls has been that after every win, Citrus has followed it up with a loss. The Lady Owls are 5-5, over their past ten games, and the trend continued tonight as it lost to Canyons College 22-30, 27-30, 30-18, 19-30 after a five set victory over Santa Monica College last Friday.
In the loss the Lady Owls were led by Kellie Hall and Becca Dean who each had a team high 14 kills, but they weren’t enough as Canyons’ had three different players reach double digits in kills, including Priscilla Bremer who had a game high 19.
The Lady Owls fell into an early hole in the first set, trailing by as much as five through the first fifteen points, as the Cougar’s cruised to a 30-22 first set victory. In the second set the Lady Owls began to pull their act together as they ran out to a 13-4 lead to start the second frame.
After a Canyons timeout however, the Cougars came roaring back going on a 13-4 run to tie the game up at 17 all. The game would remain close until Bremer pounded home one of her 19 kills to take a 23-22 lead for Canyons. From there the Cougars would never look back taking the second set by three points.
In the third the Lady Owls strung together their best game capitalizing on a Cougars squad who had a -.024 kill percentage in the third frame compared to Citrus’ .415 team kill percentage. After tying the game up at 8-8 on a Jazelle Rodriguez kill, the Lady Owls would capitalize on three straight Canyons attack errors, to take a commanding lead before finishing the game off on a 10-4 run.
In the fourth, the tables turned on the Lady Owls, and any momentum they had gained went down the drain as the Cougars strung together a .469 team kill percentage in the fourth frame to put Citrus away for good 30-19.
Janelle Martinez had yet another stellar outing recording a team and game high 37 assists. Hall who tied Dean for the team high in kills, also had three blocks (a game high), while Dean chipped in a with a team best 14 digs.
With the loss the Lady Owls fall to 7-11 overall and 2-2 in WSC South play. The Lady Owls will have yet another tough match-up on their hands as the conference's top team and state’s 8th ranked LA Pierce comes to The Owl’s Nest for a home contest on Friday. Game time is set for 6:00 PM.
