Lady Owls Win in Home Opener

Glendora, CA(Volleyball) – September 7, 2007, was a night of firsts for the Lady Owls volleyball program. It was their first home game of the year, it was their first victory of the season, and maybe most importantly it was the first career junior college win as a head volleyball coach for Shin Jung. Jung has spent the past 20 seasons on the bench with the Lady Owls, but always as an assistant. In only his second game as top banana, Coach Jung picked up his first career win, as the Lady Owls defeated Cerritos in three straight sets Friday night.

Sophomore setter Janelle Martinez recorded 29 assists in the Lady Owls 3-0 win over Cerritos Friday night. Citrus College came out firing in the 1st game winning the first three points of the match, but Cerritos quickly battled back tying the score at five a piece. Both teams would trade points back and forth, until the Lady Owls took the lead for good after back to back Kellie Hall kills made the score 24-23. Citrus finished things off when Becca Dean nailed home an kill to give the Owls a 30-27 win in the first game.

In the second game it was the Falcons who would jump out to a quick lead, leading the entire game up until back to back aces by Citrus’ Rebecca Hernandez gave the Owls a two point lead at 24-22. Cerritos would battle back from a four point deficit however, as they tied the game up at 29-29. The Lady Owls would get out from under that, as Jazelle Rodriguez recorded a kill to give the Lady Owls a one point lead. On the very next play the Owls sealed the deal on a Cerritos error to get the 31-29 victory.

The third game proved to be as hotly contested as the first two, as the score was tied 13 times before either team reached 20 points. It was the Lady Owls who would once again take control late in the game, as they built a three point lead at 25-22 after an attack error by the Falcons. Cerritos came back yet again, tying the game at 26 all before the Lady Owls got three kills from Kellie Hall in the final four points of the game to get a 30-27 win and 3-0 sweep over the Falcons.

In the win the Lady Owls were led by Kellie Hall who had a game high 15 kills. Jazelle Rodriguez was right behind her with 10 kills, while Janelle Martinez recorded 29 assists. Defensively the Owls were bolstered by freshman libero Mackenzie Pike, who had a game high 31 digs.

With the win the Lady Owls improve to 1-1 on the season. Citrus hits the road on Wednesday September 12, to take on Irvine Valley College. Game time is set for 5:00 PM.
