Sophomores Sensational In Win Over Santa Monica

Glendora, CA (Volleyball) – On a night when the Citrus College volleyball team’s sophomores were recognized in their final home game of the Citrus careers, those same sophomores stepped up in a big way to sweep Santa Monica in three straight games 30-28, 31-29, 31-29. Sophomore’s Kellie Hall, Alex Arguelles, and Janelle Martinez all had team or game highs in the victory.

In the first game the Lady Owls came out fired up and ready to play, storming out to a 17-9 lead after two kills by Hall and a kill by Jazelle Rodriguez. While Citrus jumped out to a seemingly commanding lead, the Corsairs proved to be a gritty bunch as they capitalized on a bad Becca Dean set to tie the game up at 26 a piece.  Santa Monica would go on to take a brief lead at 28-27, but the Lady Owls responded with three straight points to take the first game 30-28.

The second set was much of the same story with the Lady Owls jumping out to a seven point lead (19-12), and with Santa Monica storming back tying the game up at 29-29. With another lead almost slipping away, sophomore Alex Arguelles helped stop the bleeding by driving home a kill to give Citrus a 30-29 lead. The Corsairs helped the Lady Owls out on the next point as Santa Monica’s Rebecca Chase’s attack fell out of bounds, and the Lady Owls took home a 31-29 win.

With both teams giving and taking away, the third game proved to be the most contentious with 12 tied scores and 10 lead changes. The match would come down to its most tenuous point with the game tied up at 27-27. The Corsair’s would score the next two points and have game point at 29-27.

The Lady Owls weren’t ready to lay down however, when over the next three points the sophomores came through yet again. Kellie Hall kicked things off with a kill, and followed that up with a block assists along with Janelle Martinez. Hall finished off her flurry with a solo block to give the Lady Owls a 30-29, and Jazelle Rodriguez put the finishing touches on the Corsairs with an ace to take the final game 31-29.

In the win the Lady Owls were led by Hall who had a game high 20 kills and 4.5 blocks, while Martinez had a game high 33 assists. Arguelles chipped in with a team high .300 kill percentage, and Jazelle Rodriguez rounded things out with a game high 23 digs.

With the win the Lady Owls improve to 9-12 overall and 4-4 in WSC South play. Citrus has two more regular season games on their 2007 slate and both are on the road. The Lady Owls kick off their final two contests with a trip to Canyons College on Friday evening. Game time is set for 7:00 PM.
