Glendora, CA (Volleyball) -- Freshman Natalie Bailey played her best game of the season, and the Citrus College volleyball team picked up some much needed momentum on Tuesday evening, as the Lady Owls beat Glendale College in four sets. The victory marks Citrus' first back to back wins of the season and their fourth in their past six contests.
Bailey wasted little time in helping move Citrus along as she collected four of her team high 13 kills in the first game alone. Despite Bailey dominance, which included a .800 kill percentage in the first frame, Glendale would play Citrus tight in the first set. Both teams traded points with neither taking the reigns. With the game still close at 24-23, Bailey finally put the game away with a kill.
After a tight game in the first set, Glendale came out firing in the second taking the game easily 25-19. With such a poor showing in the second set, the Lady Owls rallied in the third jumping out to a 10-2 lead after a Mackenzie Pike ace, put Citrus up by eight. Glendale would draw to within a point of the Citrus lead, at 16-15, but freshman Cortez Holliday drove home a kill that separated the Lady Owls on their way to a 25-20 victory.
With Citrus leading two games to one, Glendale began to fight back. The fourth set would look much like the first, with both teams trading leads throughout the set, the turning point coming with the game tied up at 17 all. Needing a boost, Citrus turned to an unlikely source, as freshman defensive specialist Cedestoni Salazar's kill, followed by back to back attack errors on Vaqueros helped push Citrus towards victory. The match would finally be settled when Bailey notched her 13th kill of the game on the final point.
Along with her 13 kills, Bailey recorded six digs, and a game high four blocks. All three marks were season highs for the 5'10 freshman out of Glendora. Freshman setter Britni Dearden followed up Bailey's performance with a game high 32 assists, and sophomore libero Mackenzie Pike recorded a game high 19 digs.
With the win Citrus' record improves to 4-10 overall and 2-1 in WSC South play, while Glendale falls to 5-8 overall and 0-3 in WSC South play. Citrus will try and keep their momentum going this Friday as its hosts its second straight conference game, when Canyon's College comes to Glendora, CA for a 7:00 PM match-up.
