Glendora, CA (Volleyball) -- The Citrus College volleyball team had three chances to put away Cuesta College in the fifth set of their non-conference match on Friday night, but the Lady Owls couldn’t close out the game, and suffered their ninth loss of the season.
Citrus opened up the match with a 25-22 win in the first set, but fell in the second 19-25. The Lady Owls would come back stronger in the third, but still fell short 24-26. Trailing two games to one, the Lady Owls looked to be done early in the fourth as the Cougars jumped out to an early 8-2 lead over Citrus.
With their backs against the wall, Citrus finally responded scoring 11 of the next 13 points. The two teams would trade points back and forth, with Citrus finally pulling away from the Cougars when sophomore Becca Dean drove home a kill, to give the Lady Owls the fourth set.
As momentum finally shifted towards Citrus, the Lady Owls pulled away from Cuesta late in the fifth set, and was up 14-12 after a Brtini Dearden kill. Citrus would then have three chances to put the game away, but Cuesta roared back scoring the final four points of the match, picking up their fifth win of the season.
In the loss, Citrus was led by their freshman setter Dearden who had a team high nine kills and 26 assists. Just behind her was sophomore Dean, who recorded eight kills and 23 digs, and sophomore Mackenzie Pike who had a game high 45 digs. For Cuesta, Sara Kidd led the way with 17 digs and a game high 20 kills.
Citrus will try and bounce back from their five set loss on Tuesday when they travel North to Allan Hancock College for a 6:00 PM match-up with the Bulldogs.
