Glendora, CA (Volleyball) -- With nine new faces dotting the Citrus College Volleyball roster and five in the starting line-up, it’s been a given that there might be some growing pains along this 2009 journey. Some of those pains were very evident on Friday night as Citrus was swept in three sets by back to back CCCAA State Champion qualifier Fullerton College.
The Hornets wasted very little time in showing why they are considered a favorite to get back to the State Tournament as they jumped out to a commanding 8-2 lead in the opening set. The Lady Owls would do their best to keep pace, but Citrus was never ever to get any consistent offense going losing 25-18 in the first set.
Things got a little better in the second set as Citrus went toe to toe with Fullerton. Both teams traded points back and forth, with the Lady Owls taking their first lead of the night after a Daisy Llamas kill that gave Citrus a 19-18 advantage.
Citrus would lead by as much as two points after an attack error by the Hornets, but Fullerton regrouped and scored eight of the last 12 points to take a 26-24 win in the second game.
With the wind taken out of their sails, Citrus struggled to get anything right in the third frame as Fullerton finished off the Lady Owls 25-12.
In the loss, Citrus was led by freshman Lindsey Mitchell who recorded a team high six kills and seven digs. Sophomore Daisy Llamas also was solid, adding five kills and four blocks.
With the loss, Citrus falls to 0-2 on the young season while Fullerton improves to 2-1. Citrus will resume its pre-conference home slate on Tuesday September 15th when they play host to Antelope Valley College. Game time is set for 6:00 PM.
