Same Old Story

Glendora, CA (Volleyball) -- Tuesday night’s match-up with #22 Canyons College was no different than any other match for the Lady Owls this season. It was the same old story. Citrus hung around with the Cougars, but never could quite get enough momentum to take down Canyons as they were swept in straight sets.

Citrus would run out to an early lead on Tuesday evening, taking an 8-3 lead after a kill by Coco Holliday. The Lady Owls would continue to cling to that lead for awhile leading by five after an Ashlie Arnold service error kept Citrus’ lead at 15-10. From there on out though the Cougars would turn it on scoring 15 of the final 21 points of the set to win 25-21.

In the second set it would be all Cougars running out to a 9-5 lead after a Megan Lavo kill. Citrus would never be able to get closer than five points from there on out as Canyons cruised to a 25-20 win in the second frame.

With time running out, Citrus kept things competitive in the third frame taking a 15-10 lead half way through the set after a kill by Lindsey Mitchell. Again Canyons turned on the afterburners going on a 15-4 run to close out the set and the match.

In the loss, Citrus was led by Lindsey Mitchell’s team high 10 kills. Sophomore Coco Holliday put together one of her best outings of her career recording four kills on nine attempts with no errors and two aces.

With the loss, Citrus falls to 6-13 overall and 4-7 in WSC South play, while Canyons improves to 16-7 overall and 9-2 in conference games. The Fighting Owls will close out their 2009 campaign on Thursday when they travel to Woodland Hills to take on LA Pierce. Game time is set for 7:00 PM.
