Glendora, CA – The Citrus College Lady Owls basketball program picked up their first back to back wins to open a season since 2005 with a 77-67 win over Oxnard College on Wednesday night. The Lady Owls piggybacked freshman guard Jazmine Matthews, who came off the bench to record her first ever double-double as she poured in 22 points and grabbed 12 boards.
Citrus would jump out to an early 4-0 lead, but the Condors would quickly erase that after taking a 6-4 lead following a Des Mollgard jumper. Oxnard would hold on to their lead for the next eight minutes, until the Lady Owls briefly took the lead back over after a pair of Terri Washington free-throws made the score 24-23 in favor of Citrus. From there the Condors would take over, out-scoring Citrus 16-8 over the final nine minutes to take a 39-32 lead into half-time.
The second half would start the same way the first ended, with Oxnard scoring 10 of the first 13 points of the half to jump out to a fourteen point 49-35 lead. The Condors would lead by as much as 17 points before the Lady Owls finally began to push back. Citrus would use an 18-3 run to pull within two points after a pair of Shateah West free-throws made the score 55-57 with just over nine minutes to play.
That’s when Matthews began to take over. Matthews would score nine of Citrus’ next 13 points to push the Citrus lead to three after back to back assists and a three-pointer made the score 68-63. From there the Lady Owls would close out Oxnard as they never allowed the Condors to get closer than four points, on their way to a 77-67 win.
Matthews 22 points and 12 rebounds were both game highs in the victory. Starters Shateah West and Shaton Harris also chipped in with good games. West was the team’s second leading scorer with 11 points, while Harris recorded a game high 9 assists in the win.
With the win the Lady Owls improve to 2-0 in the young season. Citrus will hit the road this weekend as it travels east to take on Victor Valley this Saturday. Tip-off is set for 5:30 PM.
