Glendora, CA (Women’s Basketball) – Citrus College freshman guard Adrienne Domingo played her best game of the season by far in Wednesday night’s 69-60 win over West LA College. Domingo scored a season and game high 19 points on 7 of 11 shooting while swiping 6 steals, as the Lady Owls forced 35 West LA turnovers, Citrus’ second best defensive effort of the season.
The Lady Owls would set the tempo early on pushing the ball up the court, and playing full-court pressure defense. After West LA got on the board 45 seconds into the game, Citrus forced the Oilers into five straight turnovers that were all converted into fast break lay-ups and a 10-2 lead for the Lady Owls.
After opening up with a hot start, Citrus eased off the pressure and West LA came roaring back pulling to within 1-point of the Citrus lead three times over the first 15 minutes of the game, before finally tying the game up and taking the lead with 3:09 left on the clock in the first half.
Citrus would briefly grab the lead back after a trey by Adrienne Domingo with 34 seconds left made the score 28-27, but the Oilers quickly answered with a three ball of their own as Faye Caldwell sent West LA into half-time with a 30-28 lead over Citrus.
In the second half, West LA would control the tempo, slowing things down and making Citrus play a half-court game. The strategy wound up working for the first seven minutes of the half, as West LA led 36-34 with 13:23 remaining.
Seconds later, Citrus would take back control of the game however as they began to pressure and run again. The Lady Owls would take off on a 19-3 run that lasted over six minutes and included eight West LA turnovers.
When the run ended on a three-pointer by Domingo, Citrus found themselves with a 14-point 53-39 lead, and in control of the game. The Lady Owls would push their lead to as much as 20 points, before West LA finished the game 9 points back after a late push.
While Domingo was the game’s high scorer, she had plenty of help in the Citrus victory. Freshman guard Jazmine Matthews filled the stat sheet with 17 points, 8 assists, and 5 steals, while freshman center Caitlyn Hernandez played one of her most promising games to date with 9 blocks and a team high 10 boards in just 19 minutes of play.
The Lady Owls held the Oilers to just 32.3% shooting from the floor, while converting their shots at a 39.7% clip, including 41.5% shooting in the second half. Citrus out-ran West LA out-scoring them 32-10 in fast break points. Citrus’ lone down fall in the win, came from the rebounding category where West LA out-rebounded the Lady Owls by an impressive 64-31 margin.
With the win, Citrus improves to 17-10 and 4-4 in WSC South play. The Lady Owls will be back at home on Saturday to play host to LA Valley. It will be the third meeting of the year between these two squads, with Citrus stealing the first on a neutral court 57-55, and LA Valley winning the second at home 68-65. Tip-off is set for 5:30 PM.
