Lady Owls Clawed by Cougars

Santa Clarita, CA (Women’s Basketball) – The Citrus College women’s basketball team hung with 1st place Canyons College for the first ten minutes of the game, but struggled thereafter as they shot just 26.8% from the floor in the first half in their 76-95 loss to the Cougars on Saturday night.

The Lady Owls opened up the game seemingly ready to go toe to toe with a team that has won the WSC South four straight seasons and 10 of the last 15 years. The game would be tied four times in the first ten minutes, with Citrus holding up to a 5-point lead, but poor shooting by the Lady Owls helped the Cougars jump out to an insurmountable lead.

After a 3-pointer by Terri Washington pushed the Citrus lead to five points, the Cougars rattled off a 19-1 run that put Citrus in a 13 point hole. Canyons would push their lead even further expanding it to a 17 point lead going into the locker-room. Over the final ten minutes of the first half, Citrus scored just 10 points compared Canyons’ 32 points scored in that same time frame.

In the second half, Citrus would get no closer than 13 points after an unconventional 3-point play by point guard Jazmine Matthews, but it wasn’t enough as the Cougars eventually pushed their lead into the 20’s before settling in for a 19-point margin of victory.

In the loss, Citrus was led by Terri Washington who scored a team high 20 points, while Shateah West recorded her 5th double-double of the season with 16 points and a team high 10 rebounds.

With the loss, the Lady Owls’ record moves to 16-10 overall and 3-4 in WSC South play. Citrus will return home on Wednesday for a 5:30 PM meeting with West LA. The Lady Owls took the first match-up with the Oilers with an 83-51 victory back on January 12th.
