Lady Owls Drill Oilers

Culver City, CA (Women’s Basketball) – Last season it took the Lady Owls six games into their WSC South slate to pick up their first conference win, with an 80-72 home victory over West LA, just their third win of the season. For the second year in a row, Citrus picked up its first WSC South victory with a win over the Oilers, but this time it was only their second game of their conference schedule and their 14th win overall.

Freshman guard Jessica Nieves scored a game high 21 points on 8 of 16 shooting from the floor, to held lead the Lady Owls to a decisive 83-51 victory over West LA College on Saturday night. Citrus shot 48.6% from the floor and held the Oilers to just 29% shooting in the win.

Citrus led for all but the first minute of the half of the game, as West LA was the first team to put the ball in the bucket, but minutes late, Citrus would grab a two point lead after a successful Elizabeth Mejia jumper from 10-feet.

The Oilers would tie the game up twice more, but the Lady Owls would grab the lead for good after Shateah West grabbed an offensive board and went straight back up and put the ball in the hoop to push the score to 8-6.

West LA would keep the game close, pulling to within four points with just under ten minutes to play in the first half, but the Lady Owls answered with a 21-4 run capped off by a fast-break lay-up by West that made the score 38-19 in favor of Citrus.

Citrus would settle in for a 22-point lead at half-time, and continued to press the lead even further throughout the second half. Citrus’ largest lead would be 32 points, where they ended up at the end of the game with an 83-51 win.

While Nieves led all scorers with 21 points, Jazmine Matthews didn’t finish to far behind. Matthews chipped in with 14 points and a game high 7 assists. Freshman forward Shateah West did her best to help fill the stat sheet, as she finished with 7 points and a team high 10 rebounds.

With the win Citrus improves to 14-7 overall and 1-1 in WSC South play, while the Oilers fall to 5-11 and 0-2 in conference play. Citrus will be back on the road this coming Wednesday as it travels to take on LA Valley College. Game time is set for 5:30 PM.
