Lady Owls Lose Late Lead & Game

Glendora, CA (Women’s Basketball) – Despite leading the game with just under four minutes to play, the Lady Owls women’s basketball team fell victim to visiting Glendale College on Wednesday night. Citrus held a 2-point lead with 3:52 on the clock, but collapsed down the stretch, losing 59-67.

The Lady Owls started the game off just as they finished it, as Glendale jumped out to an early 7-0 lead. Citrus would fight back to within two points, but the Vaqueros quickly answered pushing their lead to as much as 10 points with just over six minutes to play in the first half. Citrus would battle back however finishing the first frame on a 15-7 run and going into the locker room trailing by just 2-points at 33-35.

In the second half, the Lady Owls seemingly came alive, taking the lead five minutes into the second period after Jazmine Matthews converted a three-point play on a jumper in the lane and the ensuing free-throw. Citrus would hold onto that lead for the next 11 minutes, and would push it to as much as 8 points before crumbling in the end.

Glendale began to chip away at the lead with just over five minutes to play, tying the game up three times between the five and three minute marks. For the first two ties, the Lady Owls had an answer as they hit all four free-throws from the charity stripe to reclaim their leads. The third time wasn’t the charm however, as Glendale took the lead for good as Glendale’s Blanco Collazo nailed the free-throw on her own three-point play giving the Vaqueros a 1-point 56-55 lead.

Glendale would go on to score four unanswered points to take a five point lead with just over two minutes left, but the Lady Owls went cold from the floor as they didn’t hit a shot from the field over the final eight minutes of the contest. Citrus would pull to within 2-points after a couple of free-throws, but without being able to hit a shot from the field, the Lady Owls ended up losing by eight points.

Terri Washington poured in a game high 29 points on 10 of 15 shooting from the floor in the loss, while Shateah West grabbed a game high 11 rebounds. With the loss, the Lady Owls fall to 15-9 overall and 2-3 in WSC South play. Citrus will be back on the road next Wednesday as it travels to Bakersfield College for a 5:30 PM match-up.
