Lady Owls Saddled by Vaqueros

Glendale, CA (Women’s Basketball) – A week after picking up their first back to back wins of the 2008 conference season, the Lady Owls have suffered their first back to back losses of the 2008 conference season as they followed up Saturday’s loss at Santa Monica with a 53-64 loss at Glendale College on Saturday night.

Despite losing by 11 points, it was the Lady Owls who came firing out of the gates. Citrus led for the six and half minutes of the game, and led by as much as five points, before the Vaqueros took over the lead after a jumper by Shantelle Maya. Glendale then flipped roles, taking a lead as large as five points, before the Lady Owls came storming back.

Trailing by five points with eight minutes to go in the first frame, Citrus took off on an 11-1 run capped off by an Elisabeth Mejia jumper on a Citrus fast break that gave the Lady Owls a 25-20 lead. Citrus would hold onto that lead until Glendale closed out the first half on a three-point play by the Vaquero’s Mackenna Karasawa that gave them a 30-29 lead with six seconds left.

In the second half, Glendale would control the lead for the first three minutes before Citrus’ took the lead away yet again. This time Citrus would hold onto the lead for nearly six minutes. Jessica Nieves would score the last points that led to a Citrus lead, as she sank a jumper that gave Citrus a 41-39 advantage.

With that Glendale went on an 18-2 tear, and the walls fell in for Citrus, as they trailed 57-43 with just under four minutes to go. The Lady Owls would make a mini-run at the lead, pulling to within nine points, but Karasawa proved to be an assassin as she scored again to kill the Citrus comeback attempt.

In the loss Terri Washington recorded her first double-double of the season with a team high 14 points and 11 rebounds. Jessica Nieves added 10 points, but no other Lady Owl finished in double figures.

With their playoff hopes getting slimmer everyday, the Lady Owls will need an impressive showing in their final regular season game next Saturday as they play host to Bakersfield College. It will be the third meeting between these two squads this season, with Citrus taking both games by 26 points and 32 points respectively. Tip-off is set for 5:30 PM.
