Woodland Hills, CA (Women’s Basketball) -- The Citrus College Women’s Basketball team continued to play well early on the season as they participated in the LA Pierce College Tournament over the Thanksgiving weekend. It was the second straight tournament in which the Lady Owls finished in an impressive third place.
In the opening contest, Citrus dominated Cerro Coso College. Sophomores Krystyn Jacobs and Bianca Nunez scored 22 and 17 points respectively, while freshman Briana Barfield added 18 in the 77-33 victory.
In the second round, Citrus faced a very tough LA Trade Tech squad (ranked #11 in the State). The Lady Owls hung tough in the first half, but foul trouble and turnovers in the second allowed the Beavers to pull away for a 71-45 victory.
In the third and final contest, Citrus drew the tournament host LA Pierce. It was the third straight year that the two teams had squared off in the tournament, and just like last year, the Lady Owls got the best of the Brahma’s bringing home a 60-51 victory in the process. Barfield was named All-Tournament for her effort throughout the weekend.
After three more games, Citrus’ record moved to 4-2 overall. The Lady Owls will hit the road yet again this weekend as they travel North to take part in the 26th Annual Conoco/Phillips Tournament hosted by Cuesta College. The Lady Owls will take on Allan Hancock in the opening round, with tip-off set for 1:30 PM on Friday.
