Glendora, CA (Women’s Basketball) -- The Citrus College women’s basketball team got a career high 30 points and a game high 14 rebounds from sophomore Shateah West, as the Lady Owls thrashed visiting Victor Valley College 74-38 on Saturday night. Citrus held the Rams to just 13 second half points in the win.

West02Citrus opened up Saturday’s game by jumping out to an 11-2 lead after a jumper by Shateah West. The Lady Owls would push their lead to as large as 15 points after a jump shot in the lane by Jessica Nieves made the score 25-10 with just over seven minutes to play in the first half.

At that point, Victor Valley began to cut into the Citrus lead, going on a 14-2 run, that ended with a 3-pointer by Monique Hoover that cut the Lady Owl lead to three points at 27-24. Citrus would finally break the run with a fast-break jumper by Nieves, but a free-throw by the Rams’ Gloria Thomas would make the score 29-25 in favor of Citrus at the end of the first half.

The Rams would open up the second half with momentum continuing on their side, cutting the Citrus lead to two points after another trey from Hoover, but this time it would be the Lady Owls who would respond with a run. Citrus proceeded to score 20 of the next 22 points, capped off by a jumper by Jazmine Matthews that gave Citrus a 51-33 lead. From there, Citrus never looked back finishing the game up by 36 points.

Along with West, Citrus got 13 points, 8 assists, and 7 rebounds from Jazmine Matthews, and another solid stat line from Krystyn Jacobs who poured in 11 points, dished out 5 assists, and pulled down 7 boards.

With the win Citrus improves to 2-1 this season, while Victor Valley falls to 0-2. The Lady Owls will take most of the next week off, before returning to action next Saturday as they

play host to Mira Costa College. Tip-off is set for 6:00 PM.
