El Cajon, CA (Women’s Basketball) -- They say that good things come in threes. That’s good news for the Citrus College Women’s Basketball (8-8) team as they finished in third place for the third time at a tournament over the past couple of days. After grabbing a third place trophy in the Barstow and LA Pierce Tournaments, the Lady Owls added one more as they took third at the Grossmont Tournament.
The Lady Owls opened up the tournament on the right foot beating Lethbridge (Canada) 67-48. Citrus led by just four points at the break, but turned it on in the second half out-scoring Lethbridge by 15 points for a 19 point win. Freshman Briana Barfield led Citrus in the win with 20 points and 14 rebounds.
In the second game, Citrus came face to face with State #6 Mt. San Jacinto for the second time this season. Much like the first meeting, the Eagles were too much for the Lady Owls as they fell 64-48. Freshman Yvonne Sanchez scored a season high 16 points in a losing effort.
After being relegated to the third place game, the Lady Owls drew Saddleback College. Citrus jumped out early on the Gauchos leading by ten points at the half, before keeping Saddleback at bay for the remainder of the game and taking home a 63-51 victory. Barfield would score a game high 25 points, while sophomore Krystyn Jacobs chipped in with 18, earning All-Tournament honors in the process.
With the conclusion of this week’s tournament, comes the end of the Lady Owls’ pre-conference schedule. Citrus will take off the next week before kicking off Western State Conference South Division play next Wednesday with a trip up North to Bakersfield College (4-7). Tip-off is set for 5:00 PM.
