Keep on Rolling

Glendora, CA (Women’s Basketball) -- Since dropping a disappointing 58-69 contest to West LA back on February 4th, the Citrus College women’s basketball team knew that it had to win the rest of their remaining games in order to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Ever since, the Lady Owls have been playing like a runaway train winning their third straight contest on Saturday night with another commanding win, this time 75-50 over Glendale College. In their last three games, the Lady Owls have been winning by an average of 35 points per game.

Over the last three contests, Citrus has made it a point to get out of the gate fast, and Saturday’s game was no different. The Lady Owls made their statement early scoring 12 of the first 14 points of the game, leading 12-2 after a free-throw by Shateah West with 14:41 left in the first half.

Citrus would continue to cruise pushing their lead to 17 points after a fast-break Dayna Lee jumper made the score 20-3. At that point Glendale began to push back cutting the Citrus lead to 6 points three different times in the first half. Everytime the Vaqueros got to with-in 6 though, Citrus had an answer, including an 11-1 run to close the first half that gave Citrus a 40-24 advantage at the break.

In the second half, Citrus just continued to keep Glendale at arms length. After the Vaqueros sliced the Citrus lead to 14 after a pair of free-throws with 16 minutes left, the Lady Owls lead never fell back below 15 points as Citrus scored 8 straight to take total command of the game.

In the win, Citrus was led by Terri Washington’s game high 20 points. The Lady Owls also dominated the battle of the boards out-rebounding Glendale 50-39. To that point, Citrus had four players finish with at least 8 rebounds, including sophomore Caitlyn Hernandez who came off the bench to pull down a game high 10 rebounds.

With the victory, Citrus improves to 21-10 overall and 7-4 in WSC South Division play, while Glendale falls to 14-14 overall and 4-6 in conference games. The Lady Owls will get a bye on Wednesday, before closing out the regular season with a game at Bakersfield. Tip-off is set for 7:00 PM.
