Lady Owls Blitzed by Corsairs

Glendora, CA (Women’s Basketball) -- The Citrus College women’s basketball team just couldn’t get things going on Saturday night, as they ran into a hot Santa Monica College team. The Corsairs shot 61.3% from the floor in the first half, and shot 54% overall, as they blitzed the state’s 20th ranked Lady Owls 82-65.

Santa Monica would control the game, almost from the get-go. Citrus would keep pace for the first seven minutes, but a 12-1 run by the Corsairs put Citrus in an early hole down 24-14 with just under ten to play. The Lady Owls would continue to fight, but Santa Monica was just to shooting lights out, pushing their lead to as much as 13-points with over three minutes to go.

The Lady Owls would settle down a bit over the final few minutes getting a deep 3-pointer from Jazmine Matthews in the closing seconds, that put Citrus down by just 8 points at half-time.

With the game still in reach, Santa Monica continued their hot-shooting ways in the second, rushing out to a 17-point lead in the first five minutes effectively take Citrus out of the contest. Every time Citrus would get a glimmer of momentum, Santa Monica would take it right back, as they cruised to a 17-point victory.

In the loss, Citrus was led by Terri Washington who came off the bench to pour in a game high 27 points. Santa Monica would have two players finish with 20 plus points, as Audriel Wyrick poured in 25 points, while, Jewell Morris added 23.

With the loss, Citrus falls to 16-8 overall and 2-2 in WSC South Division play, while Santa Monica improves to 5-12 overall and 2-1 in conference play. The Lady Owls, who have lost back to back games just once this season, will try and bounce back with a game at Glendale (12-9, 2-1) on Wednesday evening. Tip-off is set for 7:00 PM.
