Valley Glen, CA (Women’s Basketball) -- Sophomore Jazmine Matthews posted her first career triple-double with 31 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists, while fellow sophomore Terri Washington added 29 points, 8 boards, 6 assists, and 7 steals in Citrus’ 101-51 win over host LA Valley College on Saturday night.
LA Valley would be able to keep the game close for the opening eight minutes of the contest before Citrus turned on the afterburners. A fast-break lay-up by Jazmine Matthews would spark a 24-0 run, that ended with a Jessica Nieves jumper in the paint and Citrus holding a 22-point 36-14 lead. Valley would eventually stop the bleeding, but not before Citrus took a commanding 16-point lead at the half.
In the second things just got worse for the Monarchs, as Citrus used a 23-0 run from the 18:12 mark to the 12:26 mark, to take a 37-point 65-28 lead after a lay-up by Washington. Valley’s Lexi Riivas would break the streak with a jumper, but Citrus just came right back with 7 straight more as they cruised to their 50 point victory.
The win marks the first time the Lady Owls crossed the century mark all season long, as Citrus got some strong performances from more than just Matthews and Washington. Freshman Bianca Nunez, who joined the team at the start of the conference season, poured in a season high 14 points on 7 of 7 shooting from the floor. The Lady Owls also got 13 points and 5 rebounds from sophomore Jessica Nieves.
In the win, Citrus shot 54.4% from the floor, while holding Valley to just 30.3% shooting and 31 turnovers. With the win, Citrus improves to 19-10 overall and 5-4 in WSC South Division play, while Valley falls to 5-21 overall and 1-8 in conference play. The Lady Owls will enjoy a two game home stand next week, as they play host to Santa Monica College on Wednesday. Tip-off is set for 7:00 PM.
