Totally Redeeming Themselves

Glendale, CA (Women’s Basketball) -- After playing their worst 40 minutes of basketball against Santa Monica on Tuesday, the Citrus College Lady Owls, ranked #19 in the State, were looking to rebound against a tough Glendale squad on Wednesday night.

nieves15 minutes into the contest, it didn’t look like Citrus would get the effort it had hoped for, but the Lady Owls shook off their rough start, shooting 55.6% from the field and forcing 18 turnovers in the second half, as they took home a 79-64 victory over the Vaqueros.

Citrus struggled mightily in the first half opening up by going just 3 of 19 from the floor and committing 6 turnovers in the first 10 minutes of the game. While Citrus was struggling, Glendale was capitalizing jumping out to a 14 point, 24-10 lead with just over 8 minutes to play.

The Lady Owls didn’t panic however, as the slowly but surely fought their way back into the game finishing the final 2:11 with 11 straight unanswered points, as they pulled themselves to with four points, after a fast-break lay-up from Jazmine Matthews made the score 28-32.

Citrus would keep the ball rolling in the second half, taking the lead for the first time at 17:09 mark, when a Krystyn Jacobs assist led to a fast-break lay-up from Jessica Nieves. Glendale would tie the game up a few minutes later on an Amanda Quesada jumper, but the Lady Owls responded six unanswered points to regain the lead and they never looked back.

The Vaqueros would try and make another run at Citrus with a trey from Laura Armenian that pulled Glendale within three points with 10:14 left to go, but again the Lady Owls had an answer. This time Citrus would go on a 12-3 run, capped off by a Terri Washington fast-break lay-up off a Krystyn Jacobs assist that gave Citrus a 62-50 lead and all the momentum in needed to cruise to its 15 point victory.

In the win, Citrus (17-8, 3-2) was led by Terri Washington’s game high 26 points and 6 steals. The Lady Owls also had three more players finish in double-digits, with Jazmine Mathews pouring in 17 points, while Jessica Nieves and Shateah West added 11 and 10 points respectively.

Citrus will take this Saturday off, before resuming conference play next Wednesday with a home match-up against Bakersfield College (3-16, 0-3). Tip-off is set for 7:00 PM.
