Barstow, CA (Women’s Basketball) -- The Citrus College Women’s Basketball team opened their 2009-2010 campaign this past weekend, as they participated in the Barstow Holiday Inn Tournament hosted by Barstow College. The Lady Owls finished in 3rd place after all was said and done looking strong in their first three contests.
The Lady Owls opened the tournament with a solid 72-65 win over Compton College. The Lady Owls opened up a double-digit lead over Compton in the second half, but the Tartars would prove to be a pesky squad down the stretch. Citrus finally put them away in the final two minutes earning the seven point victory.
In the second game of the tournament, Citrus came face to face with the toughest team in the tournament, Mt. San Jacinto. The Eagles were ranked #14 in the State coming into the weekend and proved why as they held the Lady Owls at bay for much of the contest. Citrus would get the San Jacinto lead down to eight points with two minutes left in the contest, but the eventual tournament champion Eagles were just too much for Citrus as they fell 77-65.
In the final contest of the weekend, the Fighting Owls drew San Diego Mesa in the third place game. The Lady Owls put together their best 40 minutes of the weekend as they trounced the Olympians 70-39. Briana Barfield, Krystyn Jacobs, and Bianca Nunez all shared All-Tournament honors for their play throughout the weekend.
Citrus will continue their 09-10 schedule over the Thanksgiving Weekend as they participate in the LA Pierce College Tournament. The Lady Owls will square off with Cerro Coso College in the opening round of the tournament. Tip-off is set for 1:30 PM on Friday.
