Santa Barbara, CA (Women’s Basketball) -- The Citrus College Women’s basketball team overcame a sloppy first half, and used a pair of big runs in the second half to come away with a 63-50 win over host Santa Barbara City College on Friday evening.
The Owls didn’t get off to the greatest of starts on Friday, as they trailed Santa Barbara 24-16 with 4:20 to go in the first half. Citrus scored six of the final eight points of the half though as they went into the break trailing 26-22.
In the second half, the Owls jumped all over Santa Barbara, using a 15-1 run early in the half to go up big on the Vaqueros. Santa Barbara would rally cutting the lead to a single point at 42-41, but Citrus used another big run, this time a 16-4 variety, that put the Owls back on top 58-45 with just over two minutes to go.
In the win, Citrus was led by sophomore Brianna Barfield who poured in 23 points. Barfield piled up all those points thanks to her attacking the basket and getting to the charity stripe. Freshman Kenya Thomas added nine points and five boards, while sophomore Jasmine Cox scored eight points and ripped down 11 rebounds.
With the win, Citrus improves to 8-3 on the year. The 8-3 start is the best start for the Owls since the 2008-2009 season when Citrus went 10-3 through it’s first 13 games. Citrus will be back in Santa Barbara on Saturday afternoon to take on College of the Sequoias at 1:00 PM.
