Glendora, CA (Women’s Basketball) -- The Citrus College Women’s Basketball team got a total team effort on Saturday night as all seven Lady Owls scored at least eight points in their 70-56 win over Bakersfield College. As a team, Citrus shot 48.3% from the floor including a 51.7% out-put in the second half, as they picked up their sixth victory of the conference season.
Bakersfield proved to be a worthy adversary early on in Saturday night’s contest. The Renegades opened up the contest by scoring seven of the first nine points to take a 9-2 lead after an Ashlee Taira jumper in the paint. Citrus rallied quickly however scoring 10 unanswered points and taking a 12-9 lead after a Brianna Barfield jumper.
From that point forward Citrus began to add to their lead, taking as large as a 13-point lead after back to back lay-ups by Krystyn Jacobs and Christina Kinney that made the score 32-19 with just over three minutes to go in the first. Bakersfield didn’t give up though as they went on a 9-0 run to close out the half, and left Citrus hanging on with a 4-point 32-28 lead at the break.
Bakersfield would open up the second half with a jumper by Kaleigh Christensen that cut the lead to two, but the Lady Owls answered with scores on their next two possessions to push the lead back to six. The Renegades would rally and use a 8-0 run to take back the lead for few seconds after a pair of Alexi Smith free-throws made the score 40-39 in favor of the Renegades.
Citrus didn’t lose their cool however as they found a run of their own, this time a 14-3 one that ended up with a Jasmyne Randolph jumper in the paint and Citrus holding an 11 point lead. Bakersfield would get as close as six points with just over four minutes to go, but points in the paint from Jacobs, Jasmin Thomas and Yvonne Sanchez would push the Citrus lead back to double-digits where it remained for the rest of the contest.
In the win, Citrus was led by freshman Brianna Barfield who recorded her third straight (and fourth in five games) double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Krystyn Jacobs fell just shy of a triple-double with 9 points, 11 assists and 9 rebounds, while freshman Christina Kinney had a strong outing with 10 points and a game high 13 rebounds.
With the win, Citrus improves to 14-9 overall and 6-1 in WSC South play, while Bakersfield falls to 7-13 and 2-5. Citrus will travel to LA Valley (5-14, 2-4) for a 5:00 PM tip-off on Wednesday.
