Glendale, CA (Women’s Basketball) -- Glendale's Susana Rascon’s deep 3-point buzzer beater knocked down the Citrus College Women’s Basketball team on Wednesday night. It marked the third straight loss for the Lady Owls, and fourth in their last five games.
In what was a back and forth game throughout (9 tied scores, 16 lead changes), things didn’t get really exciting until the final twenty seconds of the contest. With the game all knotted up at 50 points a piece, Citrus came out of a time out and found a wide open Jasmin Thomas underneath the basket. Thomas laid the ball up and in, giving Citrus a 52-50 lead with 20 seconds left.
After a time out of their own, Glendale gave the ball to Amanda Quesada on the wing who found herself all alone. Quesada drove to the basket and got a lay-up with no defenders around her, tying the game back up at 52-52 with 12 seconds to play.
Citrus quickly took the inbound and ran the length of the court where Krystyn Jacobs found Briana Barfield in the lane where she made an improbable jumper to give the Lady Owls a 54-52 lead with five seconds left.
With no timeouts left for either side, Glendale got the ball out from the baseline and into the hands of Rascon who drove to about two feet behind the men’s 3-point line and let a shot fly as the horn sounded. The ball sailed through the hands of two Citrus defenders and up through the rim and the net, giving Glendale a 55-54 buzzer beater victory.
Rascon would finish the night with 13 points, 8 assists and 7 rebounds, while Citrus was led by Jacobs who put up 14 points, 9 assists and 6 boards. With the loss, Citrus falls to 14-12 overall and 6-4 in WSC South play, while Glendale improves to 10-14 overall and 3-6 in conference games.
With their playoff hopes pretty much dead, Citrus will try and finish their 2010 season on a strong note. Citrus will play host to West LA in their final home game next Wednesday, before finished up the season at Canyons next Saturday. Wednesday’s game versus the Wildcats is set to tip-off at 5:00 PM.
