Jacobs Jump Starts Citrus Past Glendale

    Saturday, January 16, 2010

Glendora, CA (Women’s Basketball) -- Sophomore Krystyn Jacobs scored a team high 13 points and fell just one assist shy of a double-double, as she jump started the Lady Owls past Glendale 60-55 on Saturday night. Jacobs’ nine assists was even more remarkable considering she turned the ball over just once.

Despite the promising finish for Citrus, it was Glendale who looked good early on. The Vaqueros opened the game one a 9-2 run capped off by an Amanda Quesada layup. Citrus kept in the game though, pulling to within a point of the Glendale lead on three separate occasions taking the lead for the first time of the night off an Yvonne Sanchez trey that gave them a 20-18 lead with 7:14 to go.

The two teams would trade back the lead twice more before the half, with Citrus taking the lead for good with just under two minutes to play thanks to Krystyn Jacobs conventional three point play that gave the Lady Owls a 27-26 advantage. After that Citrus scored the final four points of the half and take a five point lead into the break.

Citrus would open up the second half with a Jasmyne Randolph jumper, but Glendale quickly answered with seven straight points, tying the game up at 33 all after a Jenee Stephenson lay-up. The Lady Owls would respond with back to back lay-ups from Randolph and Christina Kinney before slowly pulling away from the Vaqueros. Citrus’ lead would reach 11 after a Jasmin Thomas jumper with just over five to play, but Glendale wouldn’t go away quietly cutting their lead down to three with 26 seconds left.

Needing a pair of free-throws, freshman Kinney went to the line and put the game on ice, making both and giving Citrus their 60-55 win. Jacobs was joined by Thomas and Kinney who also had double-digit scoring nights (12 and 11 points respectively), while freshman Briana Barfield pulled down a team high 12 rebounds.

With the win, Citrus improves to 12-8 overall and 4-0 in WSC South games, while Glendale falls to 8-10 and 1-2 in WSC South games. The Lady Owls get next Wednesday off thanks to a bye, and will resume WSC South play with a trip to West LA (2-16, 0-4) next Saturday. Tip-off is set for 5:00 PM.
