    Wednesday, February 01, 2012

Santa Clarita, CA (Women’s Basketball) -- The Citrus College Women’s Basketball team came out flat on the road on Wednesday and never really recovered. The Owls failed to score for the first four minutes of the game and went on to lose 86-66.

The first four minutes of the contest, proved to be a rough stretch for the Owls. Citrus had six turnovers and missed both of their first two attempts from the field. Citrus finally got on the board with 15:58 to go in the first half when sophomore Brianna Barfield hit a lay-up to make it 11-2 Canyons.

After that, it was more of the same, as Canyons then went on a 10-2 run over the next four minutes to push their lead over the Owls to 19 points. Sophomore Julia Tani would finally break it up over a minute later with a jumper that made it 23-6, but by then the hole was too deep.

In the second half, Citrus’ deficit grew to as large as 26 points midway through, and then 28 points near the end. The Owls were never able to get it below 17, a mark which they hit with 1:04 left in the game, before settling in for the 20 point loss.

In the loss, Citrus was led by Barfield’s career night with 33 points and 14 rebounds. The 33 points is a career high, and fifth most points scored in a game by an Owl in program history. No other Owl finished in double digits, but sophomore Jasmine Cox did reel in 11 rebounds. With the loss, Citrus falls to 4-18 overall and 4-3 in WSC South play. The Owls will be back at home on Saturday night for pivotal conference contest with LA Valley. Tip-off is set for 5:00 PM.
