Glendora, CA (Women’s Basketball) -- The Citrus College Women’s Basketball team finally righted the ship, snapping a three game skid on Wednesday night as they pummeled visiting West LA College 76-49. The win is the just the Lady Owls’ second in the last four games, and put their playoff destiny into their own hands.
Things didn’t start out the way Citrus had hoped on Wednesday night, as West LA proved to be a strong competitor. The Wildcats and Lady Owls traded leads on six different occasions and the score was tied up five times in the first half alone.
The two teams traded the lead back and forth almost all the way down to the final minutes of the first period. West LA would lead by as much as three points with just over four minutes to go. Citrus then used a 9-2 run to close out the half as they took their third and final lead of the night into the break where they lead 30-26.
Up by just four at the half, Citrus began to turn it up in the second half using an 11-0 run between the 17:20 and 11:55 marks in the second half to push their lead to 16 after a fast break lay-up by Bianca Nunez. From that point forward it was all Citrus the rest of the way as they grabbed a 27 point victory.
In the win, Citrus was led by freshman Briana Barfield who scored a game high 20 points and grabbed a game high 11 rebounds. Sophomore Bianca Nunez added 19 points, and sophomore Krystyn Jacobs wrapped up her final career home contest with 10 points, 9 assists and 6 rebounds.
With the win, Citrus improves to 15-12 overall and 7-4 in WSC South play. The Lady Owls still hold onto a slim playoff hope, but have to beat undefeated in conference play Canyons College on Saturday to do so. Tip-off is set for 5:00 PM in Santa Clarita.
