Valley Glen, CA (Women’s Basketball) -- LA Valley College dominated the points in the paint (34-22) and clamped down on the Citrus offense on the other end of the floor, upsetting Citrus College 61-59 on Wednesday night. It’s the second loss for Citrus in the last three games, something the Lady Owls haven’t experienced since December.
Valley would lead the contest early on, opening up the game with a 14-4 run. Citrus slowly whittled down the lead, using a 9-0 run between the 7:07 mark and 4:09 mark using a Krystyn Jacobs jumper on a fast break to take their first lead of the game 26-25. The Monarchs quickly answered with back to back buckets, but Citrus got a Bianca Nunez jumper and Jacobs free-throw to close the half tied up at 29-29.
After Valley opened up the second half with the first bucket, Citrus scored the next two before the Monarchs used a 6-0 run to take a five point 37-32 lead with 14:40 to go. The Lady Owls had an answer thanks to a basket by Jacobs in the paint and a trey from Jasmyne Randolph that tied the game back up at 37-37.
From that point forward Citrus scored nine of the next 11 points to take their first substantial lead of the game at 46-39. That’s when Valley made their final push, tying the game up at 50 all thanks to Andrea Scott’s fast break lay-up. Citrus would briefly get the lead back, but the Monarchs again pushed back tying it up 54-54 after another Scott fast break basket.
Scott followed that up with a jumper as the shot clock expired giving Valley their first lead since early on in the half. As Scott was heating up the Lady Owls were going cold, missing seven of their last eight baskets as they fell by two points.
In the loss, Citrus was led by Briana Barfield who scored a team high 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds. With the loss, Citrus falls to 14-10 overall and 6-2 in WSC South play, while Valley improves to 7-14 overall and 4-4 in conference games. The Lady Owls will try and rebound from Wednesday night’s loss on Saturday as they play host to Santa Monica College. Tip-off is set for 5:00 PM.
