    Waxed on the Glass

    Wednesday, January 27, 2010

Glendora, CA (Women’s Basketball) -- The Citrus College Women’s Basketball team was severely out-rebounded, getting waxed on the glass 71-38 (a difference of 33 rebounds), in a disappointing 87-68 loss to #18 Canyons College on Wednesday night. The Cougars had three players finish with at least 17 boards, as the Lady Owls were outscored 25-5 on second chance points in their first conference loss of the season.

Citrus struggled almost from the very beginning getting the lead twice in the first two minutes, taking the second lead after a pair of Krystyn Jacobs free-throws made the score 4-3 in their favor. That would be it though as Canyons’ Samantha Cross’ three gave the Cougars the lead for good with 17:38 to play in the first half.

Despite their problems on the boards, the Lady Owls gave it their best effort and kept it at least close for the next seven minutes. Citrus would cut the Canyons lead to just a basket after a Jacobs fast break lay-up made the score 14-16 with 10:57 on the clock. Canyons would go on a 10-2 run shortly after pushing their lead to double-digits for the first time, something that they wouldn’t relinquish for the remainder of the game.

In the loss, Citrus (13-9, 5-1) was led by Briana Barfield who scored a team high 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while Canyons (16-4, 6-0) was paced by leading WSC South Player of the Year candidate Ashley Wakefield and her 28 points and 18 rebounds.

The Lady Owls will try and bounce back this weekend as they play host to Bakersfield College. Citrus knocked off the Renegades 67-48 earlier in the season in Bakersfield. Tip-off is set for 5:00 PM.
