Glendora, CA (Women’s Soccer) – With three of their most potent offensive weapons unavailable for tonight’s conference match-up with second place Bakersfield, the Lady Owls soccer team knew they would need to control the play in the middle of the pitch and wait for the right opportunity to strike. They did just that, as they came out on top with a 1-0 victory over the Renegades.
After earning a corner kick in the 1st minute of the game, the Lady Owls were put on their heels playing strong defense, as the Renegades fired off the first two shots including a burner on which goalie Kimberly Breazeal made a spectacular diving save.
Despite being out-shot 7-3 in the 1st half, Citrus’ best chance came just 13 minutes into the game. After a Bakersfield foul, Citrus’ Susan Werndle lined up a free kick from around the 25-yard line. The kick soared over the Bakersfield line of defense and into the bottom right hand corner of the net, right out of the reach of the Renegade’s goalie giving the Owls a 1-0 lead.
Over the next 75 minutes Citrus would have to play hard nosed defense and work to keep the ball in the middle of the field. In the second half, the Lady Owls would attempt control the tempo a bit more, but were still out-shot 8-5. The Renegades had numerous opportunities, but the Citrus defense held strong and Breazeal recorded four more saves for the shut-out and win.
With the win, the Lady Owls improve to 12-4-3 overall and 6-3-2 in Western State Conference play. Citrus has three more regular season games left with the first coming on Friday back in the confines of Citrus stadium with LA Mission College. This is the second meeting between these two squads, with the Lady Owls taking home a 4-1 win in the first contest. Game time is set for 2:00 PM.
