Lady Owls Score Program Record Eight Goals in Rout of Eagles

Glendora, CA (Women’s Soccer) -- The Citrus College women’s soccer team kicked off their 2009 home slate in dramatic fashion, scoring a program record eight goals in an 8-1 rout of visiting Mt. San Jacinto College. Freshman Margarita Bernal would record a hat trick in the victory scoring in the 41st, 80th, and 81st minute.

Citrus wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard when Mandy Greer found the back of the net just 44 seconds into Tuesday’s match. Fellow freshman Tiffany Schneider would add to that less than eight minutes later when she stole the ball from an Eagle player at midfield and then dribbled down the length of the pitch to score her third goal of the season.

Holding a seemingly commanding 2-0 lead, Mt. San Jacinto began to push the tempo drawing to within a score after Ursula Cervantes slipped a shot passed Citrus goal keeper Lauren Guzman in the 29th minute. With their lead back to one goal, Citrus got themselves back into a comfortable advantage when Margarita Bernal scored off a Megan Pearce corner kick just before the end of the half.

With the game in cruise control, Citrus turned on the after-burners as Pearce added two goals to kick off the second half, one in the 45th minute and the other in the 53rd. Leading 5-1, Schneider got her second goal of the game by cleaning up a rebound in the box in the 67th minute. Bernal would add the final two goals, scoring them both within a minute of each other.

With the win, Citrus improves to 2-1-2 on the young season, while Mt. San Jacinto falls to 0-1. The Lady Owls will get back on the road this weekend as they travel to Long Beach City for a 3:00 PM match-up with the Vikings on Friday.
