Glendora, CA (Women’s Soccer) -- The Citrus College Women’s Soccer team picked up their first win of the young conference season on Friday afternoon thanks to the way they used their heads. The Lady Owls headed home two goals; both in the second half of their 2-0 win over Glendale.
After dominating the ball in the first half but coming up empty handed, the Lady Owls finally responded in the second half. After earning an early corner kick, freshman Claire Luevanos sent a deep curving ball towards the goal that fellow frosh Alexandra Vitiello headed into the back of the Glendale net in the 52nd minute. It would be Vitiello’s first goal of the season and Luevanos’ second assist in as many games.
Citrus continued control the ball offensively throughout the second half taking seven shots to Glendale’s two in just the second period alone. The second goal for the Lady Owl’s would come in stoppage time, when Citrus earned a free kick from about 30 yards out. Sophomore Lauren Reyes fired a dart to the back post where Jasmine Williams was set-up and headed the ball into the goal, her fourth of the year.
In the win, sophomore goal keeper Laura Guzman earned her fourth shut-out of the year. With the win, Citrus improves to 5-1-3 overall and 1-0-1 in WSC South play, while Glendale falls to 2-7 and 0-2 in conference games. Awaiting the Lady Owls on Tuesday is arguably their toughest test so far this year. Citrus will be traveling to Woodland Hills to take on LA Pierce College who is power ranked #1 in Southern California. Kick-off is set for 4:00 PM.
