Monday, August 30, 2010

Oxnard, CA (Women’s Soccer) -- The Citrus College Women’s Soccer team got their 2010 campaign off on the right foot this weekend as they tied College of the Sequoias 1-1 and rocked Mira Costa 5-0. It’s the first time since 2007, that the Lady Owls have left Oxnard unblemished.

Citrus opened up the Sea Breeze Tournament hosted by Oxnard College on Saturday afternoon with their match-up with College of the Sequoias. The Lady Owls notched an early goal when freshman Jasmine Williams knocked home a goal off a Claire Luevanos assist in 28th minute, and then clung to a 1-0 lead for the next 59 minutes.

Three minutes away from an opening game victory, the Lady Owls gave up a late goal to the Giants in the 87th minute and settled for a tie instead. Sophomore goal keeper Laura Guzman had a strong start in the opener, recording five saves in the draw.

In the second game of the weekend on Sunday, Citrus jumped out early and really never looked back. Veronica Lopez fired the opening salvo with a goal in the 38th minute, and Williams followed it up with her second score of the weekend in the 40th. Sophomore Megan Pearce would add two goals in the 44th and 67th minutes, while Kelsey Tucker drove in the final nail with a goal in the 88th minute.

With the tie and win, Citrus runs their 2010 record to 1-0-1, and will next week when they travel to Lancaster to take on Antelope Valley College in Marauder Stadium. The Marauders went 16-4 and qualified for the 2009 CCCAA State Playoffs last season. Kick-off for the September 7th game is set for 4:00 PM.
