    More Than They Can Chew

    Tuesday, September 22, 2009

Glendora, CA (Women’s Soccer) -- The Citrus College Women’s Soccer team played host to San Bernardino Valley College on Tuesday evening, and in the process bit off a little more then they could chew when it came to playing against what is arguably the best team in the State. The Wolverines dominated the game on the pitch out-shooting Citrus 23-9, and taking a 6-1 win over the Fighting Owls.

The Lady Owls held their own early on, answering an Evelyn Calderon (a State high 13 goals) goal with an unassisted strike from freshman Gabby Virgen in the 19th minute. For the next twenty minutes Citrus would fight the Wolverines tooth and nail and stay tied at 1-1, until SBVC’s Angelina King knocked a header home to give them a 2-1 advantage.

In the second half things turned ugly as the Wolverines stepped on the gas over a span of ten minutes, scoring three straight goals and taking a commanding 5-1 lead. With the game well out of reach, San Bernardino put Citrus out of its misery with a final goal in the 82nd minute off the foot of Abimel Corral.

With the win, San Bernardino improves to 6-0-1 overall while Citrus drops to 2-3-2. The Lady Owls will take the next week to regroup and get ready for the start of Western State Conference play which begins next Tuesday with a trip to Santa Monica College. Game-time is set for 2:00 PM.
