Second Half Struggles are Demise for Citrus

    Friday, October 09, 2009

Glendora, CA (Women’s Soccer) -- The Citrus College Women’s Soccer team played right along side Canyons College in the first half of Friday afternoon’s WSC South match-up. After the first 45 minutes things went downhill, as the Cougars scored three unanswered goals in the second half to take a 4-1 win at the behest of the Lady Owls.

The game started off well enough for Citrus as they kept pace with Canyons throughout the first half. The Cougars ripped off six shots compared to Citrus’ five in the first 45 minutes, and it would be Canyons who would get on the board first.

Taking advantage of a fast break off a Citrus turnover deep in Cougar territory, Canyons’ Sarina Coutin found a wide open Emma Wright who kicked the ball past Laura Guzman to give COC a 1-0 lead.

Citrus would answer 19 minutes later in the 31st minute when Linda Kommel took a Lady Owls corner kick and placed the ball beautifully in the Cougar goalie box. Freshman Nicole Saucedo whipped her head and the ball backwards and the ball sailed past Randi Lifsey to knot the game up at one goal a piece.

Things would go down hill quickly after that though, as Canyons took a 2-1 lead just four minutes into the second half off a corner kick of their own. The Cougars would score twice more in the 70th minute to take a commanding 4-1 lead. In the second half alone, Canyons earned four corners compared to Citrus zero, and out-shot Citrus by a margin of 9-3.

With the loss, Citrus falls to 2-6-3 and remains winless in conference at 0-3-1, while Canyons improves to 5-5-1 and 3-1 in conference play. Citrus will hit the road next week for back to back road games before coming home for a three game home stand. Citrus’ road trip starts on Tuesday when they head North to take on Bakersfield College. Game time is set for 4:00 PM.
