Friday, November 07, 2008

Glendora, CA (Women’s Water Polo) -- The Citrus College women’s water polo team avenged their sudden death overtime loss to LA Valley earlier in the season, by knocking out the Monarchs when it matter most. The Lady Owls scored a decisive 12-6 victory over Valley in the semi-finals of the Western State Conference Tournament, and advanced to the championship game tomorrow afternoon.

geigerThe Lady Owls struggled out of the gate, finding themselves in a 0-2 hole in the first two minutes of the game. After the second Valley goal, the Citrus defense settled won and began to make stops, giving the Citrus offense plenty of time to catch-up.

Citrus did exactly that, when they got two goals in the final minute and ten seconds of the first quarter thanks to sophomore Jennifer Marshall. From there the Lady Owls went on a scoring streak, recording eight of the next nine goals scored over the next two quarters, jumping out to a 10-3 lead.

Valley would finally break-up the Citrus score-fest with a trio of goals, but it was too little too late for the Monarchs, as the Lady Owls scored the final two goals of the game securing their 12-6 win.

In the win Citrus was led by Marshall and Fabela who each had four goals. Fabela also added two assists, while goalie Amelia Huss recorded a game high 13 saves. With the win Citrus improves to 12-11 overall and 4-1 in Western State Conference play, while Valley falls to 18-8 overall and 3-2 in conference competition.

The Lady Owls will take on Ventura College in the championship game in a re-match of their game back in early October. Citrus ended up on top in that game, downing the Pirates 9-8.
