Lady Owls Lose First Place Bid

    Wednesday, October 21, 2009

Glendora, CA (Women’s Water Polo) -- With first place on the line in Citrus College’s Western State Conference match-up against Ventura on Wednesday, the Lady Owls struggled against the visiting Pirates giving up nine first half goals in a 13-8 loss.

Ventura would get on the board first, getting a goal just 28 seconds into the contest thanks to Carly Clark. Citrus answered with an Ashley Griffin-Gonzales goal, but Ventura came back and rattle off three straight goals between the end of the first and the beginning of the second quarters to take a commanding 4-1 lead.

The Lady Owls would add two more goals in the second quarter, but couldn’t keep pace with the Pirates who scored six times to take a big 9-3 advantage at the half. The Lady Owls would actually outscore Ventura 5-4 over the final two frames, but the early lead was too much to overcome as Citrus fell for just the second time in its last eight games.

Freshman Ashley Griffin-Gonzales would lead the way for Citrus in the loss, scoring a team high four goals. With the loss, Citrus falls to 13-10 overall and 2-1 in WSC play, while Ventura improved to 11-4 overall and 3-0 in conference games. Citrus will try and bounce back this Friday as they participate in the Pasadena Mini-Tournament.
