Student interaction enables students to communicate with one another and with their professor to create class discussion and participation. Both the lecture AND the lab have discussion board requirements. If you are signed up for both lecture and lab but do not see two different message boards on blackboard you need to let me know immediately!
Students earn points by initiating or participating in discussions regarding readings, related web sites, or any other anthropological information.
Students must earn 100 total points in interaction for full credit for lecture and 50 total points for lab. Points can be earned through message board participation only, or a combination of message boards and chat rooms. Each message board participation is worth four points, each chat participation is worth eight points. A bonus 20 points for lecture and a bonus 4 points for lab are available after the entire required points has been earned.
Please read the ENTIRE post below before you email me with questions. I promise if you keep reading the message board, chat room, and bonus point questions will be answered. If you can't chat DON'T PANIC you can earn ALL your required and bonus points from just the message board.
How the Message Board Works:
- The first week the student will click on the message board link and log onto the black board message board
- Students who are properly enrolled on time for the course will automatically be assigned a logon and password. You log on is the same as your wingspan log on and password. You will need to contact the professor or the Distance Education Office - online@citruscollege.edu - immediately if you are not enrolled in the message board system.
- If you join the class late, or are rolled out of the class due to non-payment you will need to contact the professor or the Distance Education Office - online@citruscollege.edu - immediately to be enrolled in the message board system.
- Please note we only use Blackboard for the message board, all the other parts of the class are on the website.
- The professor will provide different discussion folders for particular topics. You can initiate discussion in one of the of the folders, or respond to a posted message
- Please note that if you do not choose to participate in the class with discussion it will significantly lower your grade and you cannot earn an "A" no matter how well you do on the other assignments. Also note that the message board is the primary way the professor communicates with the students
How the Chat Room Works:
I provide a free chat room for you all to use to work together for labs etc. I will put a spot up on the message board for you to meet and organize groups. Tapped in chats record their discussions and send out transcripts to the users. You need to send me that transcript if you want to use it for interaction credit. If you are in a chat for at least 1/2 an hour and you participate fully (don't just lurk) you can earn 8 points!
1. Go to www.tappedin.org
2. On the left hand side of the screen you will see a member sign in and guest sign in, above that is "sign up for free membership" fill everything out and they will send you a log on and password to your email
3. When it is time for chat (you all decide together for your group) go to the main page www.tappedin.org and sign in with your user name and password. I will also offer to chat if you all want it
4. Click the "search" tab in the upper right hand side of the screen and then click "groups" third from the left on the second level (its purple)
5. Type in the name "MaiaCitrus" and hit the find it button and it will take you to the room.
After the first time you enter chat you should be able to find it by going to the small window underneath the four tabs on the right hand side, if you click the little arrow down it should have saved the chat window you were in last time and take you there.
Do NOT panic if you cannot chat because of a class or life conflict. You can earn all your points through the message board. Please realize however that you cannot earn all points through chat (there are not enough) you will need to chat AND post on the message board to get full credit if you choose to chat.
How You are Graded:
- All students receive four points per message board interaction eight points per chat interaction, one hundred participation points are required for full credit for lecture and 50 points for lab. Students who do not earn all their participation points will be severely affected in their final grades. Without full participation a grade can go down an entire letter, i.e. an A to a B.
- Students will NOT be graded on postings that says things like "I agree" or "I disagree", it must be discussion
- Students will not receive points for unrelated topics it must somehow be related to anthropology. This is however a very broad area and can apply to many things
- Students will also not receive points for distasteful or offensive subject matter If distasteful matter is brought up the student will be warned in private by the professor, if it continues the student will be removed from the message board and all previously earned participation points will be taken away. This includes being RESPECTFUL. We are going to be discussing some things that not everyone will agree on. Remember that everyone is entitled to their opinion and you are not entitled to oppress them about it.
- Students will not receive credit if all discussion is lumped together at the end. All participations must be spread over the semester
- FINAL WARNING IF YOU DO NOT PARTICIPATE YOU WILL NOT GET AN A NO MATTER HOW WELL YOU DO ON THE REST OF YOUR WORK!
What to Talk About:
- Students may discuss anything as it pertains to anthropology but in general there are some guidelines to follow
- Discuss concepts that appear in the chapters and how they relate to everyday life
- Attempt to draw conclusions between the chapter terms and your short paper articles
- Ask other students or the professor questions about material that the student does not fully understand
- Research and look up related web sites and present them to the class
- Discuss topical material from everyday life (newspapers, t.v., school, work etc.) as it relates to anthropology
- In the beginning the professor will throw out questions to answer, or topics to discuss, but it is ultimately up to the students to maintain discussion
BONUS POINTS!!
Students are required to earn 100 points for lecture and 50 for lab for full credit. Any postings or chats over those points will be counted as bonus points. Students may earn up to 20 bonus points for lecture and 4 for lab. Bonus points can be earned through either message board or chats.
Potential Problems and Solutions:
- I cannot log onto the message board:
-Make sure that you are using the correct log on and password
-Make sure that you are properly enrolled in the class, if you signed up late or didn't pay contact the prof immediately.
- I got on the message board but I don't know how to post
-Read the instructions on the "getting started" portion of the Citrus College website
-Email your professor with specific question
-Go to the learning center computer lab in the EDC building for computer help
PLEASE NOTE: All student interaction e-mail is public to all students please do not discuss things on the student interaction message boards or in chat room you do not want your fellow students to know
