Discussion questions are weekly questions based on assigned readings. You will be graded on answering all questions, how well you answer the questions, and how well you use examples from the textbooks and/or other sources. Each set of questions is worth 20 points and are a SIGNIFICANT part of your grade. Simply looking up the answer in the textbook and repeating back to me what it says will not get you full credit. I expect that each answer will be well thought out, organized, and substantial.
Discussion questions are due Sundays by 11:00 p.m. of the week they are scheduled. Late questions are not accepted for any reason SO PLAN AHEAD. Many times students think this is just a threat and if they send them late with a oh I was busy excuse I will just take them NO I WON'T. Look crap happens if you have an emergency EMAIL ME and we'll TALK ABOUT IT. But if you just didn't do them and then try to sneak them in, its not going to work. I am not one of those easy going whatever kind of professors. I am one of those evil take your medicine its good for you suck it up I had to do it in college kind of professors. Don't make me break out the "when I was in college" stories people, don't make me because I will if I have to......
You may turn in discussion questions as an email or as an attachement using Microsoft Word saved as a .doc file, Microsoft Works as an .rtf file, or Adobe saved as a .PDF ONLY. I can only accept these programs nothing else will work. If you have a MAC make sure to save as an .rtf file regardless. If you do not have access to the programs email is fine. Please note the school has free computers with word for students to use, and the research paper MUST be turned in as an attachment (see the research paper link).
I will grade your questions and then respond with comments over e-mail. The comments are designed to correct misinformation and to help you further understand your responses to the readings. If you receive a grade, but no specific comments, this means the information you gave was correct and thorough. Read my comments carefully, they will help you in future assignments and should help you prepare for the exams. PLease note that since your grade is coming to you over email it is YOUR responsibility to password your email to protect the security of your grade. If you share a room/computer etc. make sure you do this if you do not want anyone else looking at your grades!!
Example Question: What is culture? Why is it important to study it?
Bad Answer: Culture is what people do everyday. We study it so we know what it is.
Better Answer: Culture is what people do everyday, things like language or clothes. We study it so we can know why people do what they do.
Best Answer: Culture is what humans use to get by in their daily lives. It is the sum total of all our experiences, our material objects, and our interactions. We learn culture from all the individuals in our lives. It is very important to study culture because we as human beings rely on it. If we have different kinds of cultual elements than we will be different people. If we understand this we can understand people and be able to understand our similarities and differences to get along better.
