The Support and Inspire Women in Mathematics career awareness field trip started with visiting UCI on Friday, January 13, 2012. The weather was beautiful and the girls loved the Irvine campus of the University of California!
The UCI visit was followed by a trip to the grocery store to buy the ingredients for their Saturday meals. The girls had to use their mathematical skills to figure out how to stay within budget and the exact quantities of food they needed to buy for the meals they had in mind!
Saturday, January 14, 2012, was spent cooking, taking walks on the beach, playing pool and ping pong, and enjoying hot dogs at the fire pit, in the evening. Math is a part of all this! How can you be good at cooking if you don’t know your measurements? How can you play pool if you don’t know your vectors?

On Sunday, January 15, 2012, the WIM visited the Ocean Institute, participated in the student activities available for the visitors, including a two-hour cruise. How fast can dolphins swim? What is the vector diagram of a bird in dynamic equilibrium? What is the most accurate angle of dissection? Math is all around us!
