Refer to the College Catalogue for additional information regarding standards of conduct and due process.

- Progress Reports
- Reports of student academic progress and attendance that are required for EOPS/CARE Programs, athletics, scholarships, grants, or other uses will be completed upon request. Allow sufficient time for the report to be completed and returned to you for submission to the appropriate office by the deadline. Submission of progress reports in a timely manner is the responsibility of the student and not the instructor.
- Class Activities
- Class activities will consist of the following components:
- Read the assigned textbook material for class and any announcements or Discussion Thread postings.
- The instructor will post a Discussion Question from the week’s reading material for student response on the Discussion Board at the beginning of the week (Monday). After reading the weekly assignment textbook chapter(s), each student should be prepared to comment on the question by posting a response on the Discussion Board for other students/instructor to comment on in Discussion Thread format. The weekly Discussion Question will be posted on the Discussion Board for one week. Since the class is online, responses can be posted anytime during the week.
- Participate in online discussions by posting and responding to messages presented.
- Complete weekly chapter quizzes and post response(s) to the Assignment Folder.
- The term paper is an individual assignment due at the end of the semester.
- Complete the Midterm and Final Exams in the Testing Center during the week of the assigned examination.
- Post Weekly Chapter Summaries in the Assignment Folder.
- Special Needs
- Any student who requires additional assistance in test taking, note taking, etc., should contact the instructor and the Learning Skills center in the EDC Building Second Floor within the first two weeks of class. The phone number of the DSP&S Office is (626) 914-8675.
- Attendance
- It is your responsibility to drop from class in the Admissions and Records Office if you are unable to complete the course or you will receive an appropriate letter grade. The deadline to drop without receiving a grade is TBA.
- Participation
- Participation is very important online you will be expected to participate in several different discussions and to contribute to class through designated activities and discussion messages during the week. This is a required part of your grade.
Please note that both quantity and quality are important considerations when it comes to participation. For example, a message which says simply, "I agree," does not constitute participation, because it does not add anything of substance to the discussion.
In order to earn full participation points, you must add something of substance to the discussion that would consist of new ideas, your perspectives, pointed follow-up questions, etc. You will find it is much easier to keep up with an online class when you are logging in and participating regularly. Students are required to post one response each week to the posted Discussion Question as a Discussion Thread and make one comment of another student’s posting (minimum of 2 postings). Responses to Discussion Questions should be at least 200-300 words. Students can earn up to 10 points each week for this activity.
- Weekly Summaries
- Weekly summaries will be required in this course and counted as class participation. Written responses are to be posted in the Discussion Board Folder by Friday of each week by 10 PM. Students can earn up to 5 points each week for posting this assignment
- Participation in Class Activities
- Students are expected to participate in all class activities for maximum credit. Participation will be measured by communication during Discussion Threads, posting of required and optional items in the Assignment Folder, submission of materials in a timely manner, and e-mail contact with the instructor. Contact the instructor if you have circumstances affecting your ability to participate in class activities. Weekly participation in class activities earns 10 points.
- Term Paper
- Each student will be required to prepare a term paper due on Friday, December 7th. The theme of the paper will be each student’s research of the impact of gangs in the correctional system. This paper is to be typed, double spaced, have margins of 1" on the top, sides and bottom, and be approximately 5-7 pages in length. It must have a minimum of 3-5 resources listed on its bibliography and have a cover or title page. Each student should follow APA format guidelines for format requirements. This assignment is worth 40 points.
- Extra Credit
- Extra credit will be awarded for those students who present their research based from their term paper in PowerPoint format on Friday, December 7th. The presentation is to expand upon the term paper theme assignment and follow appropriate reference requirements of APA format. A maximum of 50 points can be earned for this optional activity.
- Quizzes and Exams
- Quizzes will be administered following the week’s discussion of class agenda. The Midterm and Final Exams will be administered and proctored in the Testing Center during the week of the scheduled test. Cheating will not be tolerated and can result in dismissal from class and/or school. The Testing Center is located on the second floor of the Educational Development Center Building, Room ED 215. The Testing Center is normally open from 8AM – 9PM, Monday through Thursday and 8AM through 4PM on Friday and Saturday. Call the Testing Center at (626) 857-4035 to confirm hours if you have any questions. The Testing center has specific rules of conduct regarding cell phones, times at which testing material is collected, and other matters. A handout is available at the center. Photo identification is required. Since the times/days to take quizzes and exams are flexible during any given week, no make-ups will be permitted.
