Science Specific Subject Directories:
Academic Info - Academic Info is an educational gateway for secondary school, college, and research level resources. It has a well-organized subject directory with links to subject websites, associations, journals, and current news on that subject. The only drawback is the prominent requests for sponsorship on each page.
Science.Gov - Science.Gov contains resources selected by various U.S. government agencies as their best science information. Two major types of information are included-selected authoritative science Web sites and databases of technical reports, journal articles, conference proceedings, and other published materials.
SciNet - SciNet is a specialized directory and search engine covering only science subjects. It has well organized and maintained subject categories. The search function allows you to search the directory or the Web. Also provided are links to other science specific search engines. Drawbacks are the flashing banner ads and the "free" email, which provides your name and address to advertisers.
General Subject Directories:
Galaxy - Galaxy claims to be the world's first searchable directory, in existence since 1994 (although it's changed hands a few times since then). It offers a very extensive directory, with particularly good engineering and technology links.
Open Directory Project - The Open Directory Project claims to be the largest, most comprehensive human edited directory of the Web. It provides links to sites in many different languages. You can search the entire directory or a particular category, or can bump your search out to one or more major search engines. ODP is particularly strong in social sciences and technology.
School Atlas - School Atlas is an educational portal geared primarily to K-12 students and educators. The science subject directory is particularly strong in biology and has good listings for science fair projects. The search feature allows you to search your choice of search engines, or to limit your search to academic websites only.

Scirus - Scirus is a science specific search engine. Scirus covers over 120 million web pages, including free and journal sources, ScienceDirect, MEDLINE on BioMedNet, Beilstein on ChemWeb, BioMed Central, US Patent Office, E-Print ArXiv, Chemistry Preprint Server, Computer Science Preprint Server, Mathematics Preprint Server, CogPrints and NASA.
Invisible Web and Specialty Sites:
Complete Planet - Complete Planet allows you to search over 100,000 databases and specialty search engines using keywords, natural language, or full Boolean operators. The combined search allows you to set first, second, and third level topic categories to narrow your search.
Invisible Web - Invisible Web also claims to search over 100,000 databases and specialty search engines. Results can be somewhat sporadic (a recent search for "human cloning" returned zero hits!), but it is strong in other subjects, particularly computers.
Profusion - Profusion is a meta search engine that can search PDF files, enabling it to access some invisible web sites. You can create an account, allowing you to customize your searches. For long searches, you can elect to run the search in the background and have the results delivered to you by email.
Academic Resources.Net - Academic Resources.Net provides links to journals, reference sites, libraries, research institutes, universities, government sites, databases and other sources. Try their Virtual Tour of Science!
American Society of Civil Engineers Database - The Civil Engineering Database is designed to provide easy access to all ASCE publications. The database covers ASCE documents published since 1970. It provides access to all the journals, conference proceedings, books, standards, manuals, magazines, and newspapers.
Biology Project - The Biology Project was developed at the University of Arizona as an interactive online resource. It was designed for biology students at the college and high school level, but is useful for medical students, physicians, science writers, and all types of interested people. There are also lesson plans and activities for K-12 students and teachers.
BioTech - BioTech is a hybrid biology/chemistry educational resource and research tool for high school students through professional researchers. On a recent visit, several pages (including the search page) were not working. If they can get the bugs worked out, this will be a very useful site.
Blue Web'N - Blue Web'n is an online library of over 1700 Internet sites categorized by subject, grade level, and format (lessons, activities, projects, resources, references, & tools). You can search by grade level broad subject area or specific sub-categories.
Chemicool Periodic Table - Chemicool is a periodic table with extensive information about each element.
ChemInfo - CHEMINFO, Chemical Information Sources, is designed to help people find and learn how to use chemical information resources on the Internet and elsewhere. It is sponsored by Indiana University and most of the resources listed are based there, but you can elect to bump your search out onto the WWW.
CiteSeer Scientific Literature Digital Library - CiteSeer (Research Index) is a searchable database of author submitted scientific papers. Not only do the results link to the full text of a given article, but CiteSeer tracks citations to that article, articles that are related to it, and comments/reviews of those who have read it.
EELink - EE Link is a project of the North American Association for Environmental Education. It provides a variety of resources for students, teachers, and professionals.
EEVL - The Internet Guide to Engineering, Mathematics, and Computing - EEVL is a U.K. based site, which provides access to quality engineering, mathematics, and computing resources. Its target audience is secondary students, teachers, and researchers. You can search all, or limit the search to one of the categories.
The Electronic Volcano - The Electronic Volcano provides many types of materials on active volcanoes worldwide, such as maps, photographs and full texts of dissertations.
Encyclopedia Astronautica - Encyclopedia Astronautica is an online reference source for all things related to space and space flight, including astronauts and cosmonauts, spacecraft, launch vehicles, and data on projects proposed, but not yet completed or projects that were cancelled before completion.
EnviroLink - EnviroLink is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing comprehensive, up-to-date environmental information and news. You can search or browse resources by topic or category. You can also subscribe to receive their free email newsletter.
How Stuff Works - The name says it all - brief, easy-to-understand explanations of how just about anything in modern life works. You can search by keyword or browse by category. There is a free email newsletter.
iCivilEngineer.com - iCivilEngineer.com is a knowledge portal specially designed for civil engineering professionals and students.
Measure 4 Measure - Measure 4 Measure is a collection of interactive web sites that estimate, calculate, evaluate, and translate just about anything and everything.
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration - The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration conducts research and gathers data about the global oceans, atmosphere, space, and sun. The site is particularly useful for climate and weather information. The photo album is a great feature.
National Human Genome Research Institute - The National Human Genome Research Institute supports genetic and genomic research, investigation into the ethical, legal and social implications surrounding genetics research, and educational outreach activities. Includes good resources for K-12 educators - check out the talking glossary!
Nine Planets - The Nine Planets is a collection of information about our Solar System intended for a general audience with little technical background. Each major body in the solar system has a page which includes pictures, some scientific and historical facts, a page of data on any satellites the body may have, and links to additional resources.
Nobel Prize Internet Archive - This site maintains information on all Nobel Prize winners in all categories. Click on any Nobel category (literature, physics, chemistry, peace, economics, or physiology & medicine) to see an annotated, hyperlinked list of all Nobel laureates in that category.
Nua.com - The Nua.com database covers over 4 years of Internet demographics and trends. You can search by country, category, social issue, tool, or demographic. Check out "How Many Online?"
Office of Scientific and Technical Information - The Department of Energy Office of Scientific and Technical Information website provides access to a comprehensive resource of scientific and technical information in physics and other disciplines of concern to the Department of Energy. It includes gray literature, preprint literature, and journal articles.
PhysLink - PhysLink.com is a comprehensive physics and astronomy online education, research and reference web site. In addition to its search feature, it has good links in its education and reference section.
Plants Database - The Plants database is a source of standardized information about plants in the U.S. and its territories. It includes names, checklists, automated tools, identification information, species abstracts, distributional data, crop information, plant symbols, plant growth data, plant materials information, plant links, references, and other plant information.
PSIGate: Physical Sciences Information Gateway - PSIgate provides access to Internet resources for students, researchers and practitioners in the physical sciences, specifically in: astronomy, chemistry, earth sciences, physics, and science history and policy. Each resource has been selected by information professionals and subject specialists. A full description of each resource is provided, together with a range of other information and direct access to the resource itself.
PubList - PubList.com is a reference for over 150,000 domestic and international print and electronic publications including magazines, journals, e-journals, newsletters, and monographs. It provides access to detailed publication information including, titles, formats, publisher addresses, editor contacts, circulation data, and ISSN numbers. PubList.com also provides access to subscription services as well as article level information through rights and permissions providers and document delivery services.
Science Daily - Science Daily is an online magazine and web portal presenting news releases in science, medicine, and technology. Universities and other research organizations submit the news releases. Each is posted in its original form, with a contact name and link to the organization's home page. There is a searchable archive.
Science Online - Science Online allows you to see the tables of contents of several publications of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. You can search for articles in these journals and a wide range of other science journals. In many cases, abstracts are provided, but full text is limited to journal subscribers.
U.S. Geological Survey - The U.S. Geological Survey is a division of the Department of the Interior, which focuses on natural hazards, resources, the environment, and information and data management.
The Why Files: Science Behind the News - The Why Files is a searchable database of articles explaining the science behind everyday news stories. The archives are browsable by subject or theme and there are links for teachers in grades 5-12, to help them match current science topics to educational standards by grade.
World Wildlife Fund - The World Wildlife Fund is the largest privately supported conservation organization in the world. You can search the site overall, browse the featured sites, or submit a question to be answered by email. There are useful links for kids and for teachers.
