My Citrus Story- Carole Chambers
As if they are now, and later they shall be.
School had always been challenging for me, so I never dreamed I would ever attend, much less graduate, from college. In high school, the only thing that kept me going was sports. Having a baby at the age of eighteen seemed to put an end to any thoughts I had for furthering my education or pursuing a career. Everything changed when a high school friend called and said she needed a pitcher for her softball team at Citrus College. The next thing I knew, I was playing collegiate softball and taking classes.
Anyone who plays sports knows winning is the result of a team effort, and that’s what I encountered at Citrus College when it came to softball and academics. Yes, team academics. I worked hard, but the advice and support I received from my teachers and counselors helped me overcome the old obstacles that had frustrated me back in high school. I managed to persevere through the tough times and ultimately won a major scholarship because of their encouragement and help. I transferred to the University of La Verne where I eventually received my master’s degree in counseling.
Today, as a teacher (who has three children attending Citrus College) I still use that combination of dedication, perseverance, and teamwork to overcome obstacles and achieve my goals. What’s more, I’ve learned there is really nothing more rewarding than helping others achieve their dreams.
Thank you, Citrus, for showing me that anything is possible.
