My Citrus Story- Christina Miller

As if we are now, and later they shall be.

My childhood schooling experience was unusual, to say the least. For several years, I was homeschooled onboard a yacht as my parents circumnavigated the globe.  After we returned to Southern California from our voyages, and I started attending regular school, I never really gave much thought to what I was going to do with my life after high school graduation except maybe daydreaming about being an artist. I made no plans. In fact, I didn’t start thinking about college until the spring of my senior year when a school counselor recommended Citrus College.  After a series of placement tests, I enrolled in basic skills classes in English and math, along with my other courses.

Looking back, it was the best decision I could have made. At Citrus I discovered how much I loved learning and how much I loved helping others learn. Instead of becoming an artist, I found I had an ability to paint with words. While I started out slowly, I soon made rapid progress toward becoming not just a teacher, but an English teacher no less. I went from being a remedial student to excelling in literature classes. It was the support and encouragement of a fantastic group of professors who helped me navigate toward a real goal. They became more than mentors – they became my friends.

Maybe the “unusual” defines my overall experience in schools throughout my life. I started off at Citrus unsure of myself and annoyed that I hadn’t made it in to a four-year university as so many of my friends had. I now know I wouldn’t trade my experience here for any other school in the world. Citrus gave me the confidence and the pride to stand up for what I wanted – and supported me with care, concern, and true friendship.

Attending Citrus College has been the best decision of my life.
