My Citrus Story- Kevin Chau
As if they are now, and later they shall be.
From my first year in school I had trouble keeping up academically. I got along with classmates and excelled at many things, but I struggled to learn. In the third grade I was diagnosed with multiple learning disabilities. I felt frustrated when other students made easy progress. I spent many hours with tutors and specialists yet never mastered anything. I became more self-conscious of my impaired ability to learn, which led to even more problems. When I was in high school, we lived in Germany where I attended a private school. At the time I didn’t think about going to college. It was difficult enough to earn passing grades, let alone decide on a major and a career path.
When I returned to the States, my friends all went to four-year colleges, but I decided to enroll at Citrus, hoping to avoid the pressure to succeed. I knew I wouldn’t just glide by – every course would be a challenge. When I placed into basic skills courses I was surprised at how difficult they were. My professors went out of their way to help me improve my speaking, reading, writing, and general study habits. As I persevered, I went from feeling estranged as a student to feeling as though I were an important member of each class. I was contributing.
That was extremely helpful. It’s amazing what a little academic confidence can do. I not only became a much better student, but I completed my GE requirements and transferred to CSU Fullerton, where I will soon earn a bachelor’s degree in graphic arts. What’s more, I enjoy learning now and I have a career path mapped out. The difference Citrus College has made in my life is incalculable. For so long I felt lost, but now I’ve discovered my way.
Citrus College met my unique needs, and I will forever be grateful for all I learned there.
