MY CITRUS STORY - Citrus College Men's Basketball Champions
As if they are now, and later they shall be.
In 2008, after nearly fifty years of trying, the men of Citrus went 35-1 overall and 12-0 in conference play to win their first-ever State Basketball Championship. Head coach Rick Croy credited his players' commitment to put team achievement above personal gain as the reason the Fighting Owls were able to rally from behind to win time and again. "It was magical," Coach Croy said. After suffering an early December loss, the Owls stormed through March to capture the regional title with a 99-95 overtime victory against the LA City College Cubs. At the state tournament in Stockton, the Owls defeated the College of the Sequoias Giants and LA Trade Tech Beavers before facing Fullerton College in the final game. After trading leads throughout game, the Owls beat the Hornets to secure the historic championship. As proud as he was of his team on the court, Coach Croy said the greatest achievement of the season was that all eight sophomores transferred to universities, all received full scholarships, and now all eight are set to win forever.
